PLB, extended range
A Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is a compact, lifesaving device designed to send a distress signal in emergency situations at sea. When activated, a PLB transmits a distress signal via satellite, relaying your exact GPS coordinates to global search and rescue (SAR) teams. Where unpredictable weather, rough seas, and mechanical failures can put lives at risk, a PLB is a critical backup to onboard emergency equipment. We introduce to you PLB EXT-range, a new and improved PLB with improved range and automatic deployment upon immersion in water.

About the Project
Personal Locator Beacon

Challenge
The purpose of these devices is critical in search and rescue and can be the difference between life and death. We wanted to explore how the functionality of these could be improved, and so looked at developing a man-worn PLB that integrates into a life vest and activates automatically upon immersion, removing the need for manual operation in emergencies. Traditional PLBs can also suffer from signal obstruction near the water’s surface, so we needed to design a GPS/AIS antenna (161.975/162.025 MHz) that extends above ground clutter for enhanced range and visibility. Inspired by an insect’s proboscis, we explored a compact, unfurling antenna mechanism to ensure optimal signal transmission in life-threatening situations.
Outcome
The result is a self-activating PLB that offers hands-free distress signalling in man-over-board emergencies. Upon life vest inflation, the device deploys an elevated antenna, maximising signal range and reliability. This enhances safety for seafarers by ensuring that a distress signal is sent instantly, increasing the chances of rapid rescue, even if the wearer is incapacitated. Our solution combines automation, extended range, and seamless integration for superior emergency response.
